The European Union has mandated that Google must expand access to its Android platform and search services, a move aimed at fostering greater competition within the digital marketplace. As part of these new regulations, Google is required to open up 11 Android features to rival artificial intelligence developers. This will enable competing AI assistants to utilize essential device functions and respond to voice commands in a manner akin to Google’s own Gemini assistant. These adjustments are slated to reach users with an anticipated Android update set for July 2027.
Additionally, Google will be obliged to share certain anonymized search data with AI companies and other search services. This initiative is intended to help these companies enhance their search-based offerings. However, before sharing this data, Google is permitted to evaluate whether the requesting companies meet cybersecurity and data protection standards. This data-sharing provision is scheduled to be implemented from January next year.
The European Commission emphasized that these measures are built with safeguards to protect user privacy and device security while simultaneously promoting increased competition in artificial intelligence and online search sectors. This regulatory action is part of the EU’s broader Digital Markets Act, which seeks to diminish the dominance of major tech firms and offer consumers a wider array of choices in digital services.
Google, however, has criticized the EU’s decision, expressing concerns that these changes could potentially compromise user privacy and security. Despite the company’s efforts to propose solutions that address regulatory issues, Google maintains that the imposed requirements might weaken the protections currently in place for its users.
