Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rebutted U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of Mexico’s handling of drug trafficking and organized crime, asserting that her government is actively addressing these challenges. During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico does not require external judgment and highlighted the country’s accountability for its actions.

Sheinbaum pointed out the shared responsibility in combatting cross-border drug issues, urging the U.S. to focus on its role in stopping drug trafficking, money laundering, illegal arms flows, and addressing domestic drug consumption. She specifically questioned the measures the U.S. government is taking to prosecute drug traffickers, prevent money laundering, and curb the illegal flow of weapons into Mexico.

While acknowledging the severity of drug production and trafficking problems, Sheinbaum argued that the illegal flow of firearms from the U.S. exacerbates the firepower of criminal organizations in Mexico. She also called for more transparency regarding U.S. efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and domestic opioid addiction.

In response to Trump’s demands for stronger action against officials linked to drug cartels, Sheinbaum defended Mexico’s efforts. She cited arrests of officials suspected of ties to criminal organizations, carried out under Operation Swarm, and emphasized that such prosecutions occur when evidence is available, irrespective of political affiliations.

Sheinbaum’s comments come amid ongoing calls from the Trump administration for Mexico to intensify its fight against corruption and organized crime. The Mexican president’s remarks underscore the need for both nations to collaboratively address the complexities of the cross-border drug crisis.
