Sheinbaum Reports Progress in US-Mexico Trade Agreement Discussions

by Editorial Team

Mexico and the United States are advancing in their discussions toward a new trade agreement, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Sheinbaum revealed that she recently held a productive conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump centered on trade negotiations, though she emphasized that a final agreement has not yet been reached.

The dialogue is part of ongoing efforts to address trade issues under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Key topics in these discussions include tariffs on Mexican automobiles, steel, and aluminum. The call between the two leaders, which took place on Wednesday, was focused solely on trade matters, leaving aside other bilateral issues such as security and drug trafficking efforts.

Sheinbaum has maintained an active line of communication with President Trump, having spoken with him 22 times since January 2025. She noted that their conversations are typically made public once concrete agreements are achieved. The continued discussions signal both countries’ commitment to resolving outstanding trade disputes and working toward a comprehensive agreement.

As the negotiations proceed, both Mexico and the United States are keen on finding common ground that could lead to the resolution of these pivotal trade concerns. The development of these talks is being closely monitored as they hold significant implications for the economic relationship between the two nations.
