Brazil’s Lula Advocates for Sovereignty, Urges Enhanced Global Cooperation

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took the stage at the United Nations General Assembly to champion multilateralism and denounce foreign interference in Brazil and Latin America’s affairs. In his speech, Lula criticized attacks on the United Nations and advocated for enhanced international cooperation to address global conflicts and avert wars.

Lula expressed concern over the UN Security Council’s inability to effectively manage global crises, which he argued has exacerbated the current international situation. Addressing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, he specifically condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza, highlighting the harm inflicted on women and children.

Turning his focus to regional matters, Lula asserted Brazil’s autonomy in shaping its political and economic future, rejecting external meddling in Latin American affairs. “Brazil does not fit in anyone’s backyard,” he stated, urging for partnerships that emphasize development and increased regional integration.

Lula also addressed the situation in Venezuela, advocating for the right of its citizens to chart their own course without foreign interventions driven by strategic interests. His remarks come amid tense relations between Brazil and the United States, strained further by a tariff dispute and differing U.S. policies toward Brazil.

Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the United Nations, Lula noted his history of delivering opening addresses to the General Assembly, a tradition he has upheld since 2003. His speech reinforced a vision for a cooperative international landscape free from undue interference.
