Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to maintaining national sovereignty while engaging in international cooperation. In his first address to the assembly, Velasco emphasized Mexico’s approach of working with other nations without compromising its sovereignty and highlighted the country’s efforts in social policies and poverty reduction.

Representing President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco linked Mexico’s domestic policies to its broader stance on international issues, arguing that sustainable peace is rooted in social development and respect for nations’ territorial integrity. He also addressed global concerns, reaffirming Mexico’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East and the recognition of Palestine’s right to exist with secure borders. Furthermore, Velasco reiterated Mexico’s opposition to the U.S. embargo on Cuba and committed to ongoing humanitarian assistance to the region.

During the assembly, Velasco engaged with foreign officials from various countries, including Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru, to strengthen international partnerships. His discussions with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares focused on bilateral relations and preparations for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.

Talks with Peru centered on the reopening of their embassies following restored diplomatic relations, with both nations pledging to continue working through dialogue and mutual respect. Other meetings addressed topics such as economic cooperation, strategic investment, UN reform, trade relations, and efforts to bolster multilateral institutions.
