Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has come to López Beltrán’s defense, asserting that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing against him.
In spite of the diplomatic spat, the two nations continue to collaborate on security matters. U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson recently announced that Mexico will have access to the U.S. drone procurement market, a move that underscores the ongoing defense collaboration between the countries. This development highlights a commitment to maintaining a working relationship in defense sectors, even as political disagreements simmer beneath the surface.
Further illustrating efforts to sustain bilateral cooperation, President Sheinbaum has authorized Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch to attend a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) security conference in Argentina. This decision marks a reversal from an earlier stance not to participate, signaling a willingness to engage on issues of mutual concern like drug trafficking, border security, and organized crime.
The relationship between Mexico and the United States is not without its strains. U.S. allegations against officials in Mexico’s Sinaloa state have added tension, alongside Washington’s calls for arrests and extraditions. Mexico has pushed back against some of these demands, emphasizing its sovereignty in the face of outside pressure.
