The Board of Peace will convene a key meeting on September 23 to discuss ongoing efforts to rebuild Gaza, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly. This briefing aims to bring together representatives from numerous countries to evaluate the progress and outline future priorities for the reconstruction of Gaza under the plan initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Participants at the meeting will include Board members, international partners, mediators, and other stakeholders, with representatives from several United Nations agencies and the European Union also expected to attend. The agenda will cover updates on negotiations concerning the disarmament of Hamas and other militant groups, alongside plans for governance, reconstruction, and humanitarian projects in the region.
A significant part of the discussion will involve a committee of Palestinian technocrats presenting details of 71 projects planned for the initial six months of the reconstruction initiative. However, the commencement of these projects remains uncertain, as the broader initiative is currently stalled due to disagreements over the disarmament of armed factions in Gaza.
The Board of Peace has been working towards advancing the disarmament plan, which is crucial for the reconstruction efforts. However, resistance from Israel regarding key elements of the proposal poses a significant challenge. Israeli cooperation is considered essential for moving forward with the planned projects and governance measures in Gaza.
