El Salvador welcomed 4.1 million international visitors in 2025, continuing its steady growth in tourism, with a notable influx of approximately 1.5 million travelers from neighboring Guatemala. Similarly, the appeal of Guatemala is drawing more than 1.75 million Salvadorans across the border, underscoring the surge in regional tourism and short cross-border excursions.
Unlike traditional tourism patterns that rely heavily on international flights, this increase is largely supported by road travel. Nearly half of El Salvador’s tourists arrived by land, with Guatemala reporting even higher figures for overland arrivals. This trend has given rise to what experts term “exploration tourism,” where visitors embark on brief getaways to explore beaches, mountain towns, cultural landmarks, and natural attractions.
Popular destinations for Guatemalan tourists include the surf-friendly shores of Playa El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte in El Salvador. Conversely, Salvadoran tourists often head to Guatemala’s volcanic landscapes, hot springs, and mountain vistas. Enhanced border infrastructure and streamlined migration procedures are also playing a crucial role in facilitating this tourist boom by minimizing travel delays between the two nations.
The burgeoning tourism corridor is invigorating economic activities in the border regions, benefiting local restaurants, hotels, and businesses. Officials anticipate the trend of overland tourism will continue to rise through 2026, further strengthening the economic ties between the two countries. This growth is also posing new challenges for Costa Rica, whose tourism industry is still largely reliant on long-haul international visitors from North America and Europe.
As Central America increasingly positions itself as an interconnected, multi-country travel destination, tourism operators are seizing the opportunity to create regional travel packages.
