Russian Tanker Alters Course After Atlantic Delay en Route to Cuba

by admin477351

A Russian tanker carrying diesel fuel, initially destined for Cuba, has reportedly shifted its course toward Brazil after weeks of drifting aimlessly in the Atlantic Ocean. The tanker, named Universal, embarked on its journey from Russia in April with approximately 270,000 barrels of diesel on board, intending to support Cuba amid the island’s ongoing fuel shortages and electricity blackouts.

Tracking data indicated that the vessel spent several weeks in the Sargasso Sea, northeast of the Caribbean, before altering its path southward. The change in course was accompanied by an update to its listed destination, now marked as “For order,” a maritime term used when a vessel awaits new instructions or a final destination decision.

The Universal is under sanctions from the United States, the European Union, Britain, Switzerland, and Canada. These restrictions have posed challenges for Russian oil shipments to Cuba, a nation already grappling with intensified pressure on its fuel imports. So far this year, only one Russian tanker has reportedly succeeded in delivering oil supplies to Cuba with authorization, though those supplies were rapidly depleted, exacerbating the energy crisis on the island.

As the situation unfolds, tensions between the United States and Cuba have been rising. The U.S. has continued to apply economic pressure on Havana, urging political and economic reforms. Legal actions have also been taken against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro regarding the 1996 aircraft shootdown incident involving the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. In a related move, the U.S. recently deployed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its strike group to the region, further signaling the tense relations between Washington and Havana.

The Universal’s journey, beginning at the Russian port of Vistino in early April, was initially escorted by Russian naval vessels before it entered the open waters of the Atlantic. This development underscores the complexities and geopolitical ramifications of international oil trade, especially under the constraints of broad sanctions.
