The Art of Letting Go: How 3 Simple Asanas Release Stored Stress

Stress and anxiety are not just fleeting feelings; they can become physically stored in our bodies as chronic muscle tension. Yoga provides the tools for “letting go” of this stored tension, creating a ripple effect that calms the mind. A sequence of three particular asanas is a masterclass in the art of physical and mental release.
Begin your practice of letting go with Balasana (Child’s Pose). The very nature of this pose is surrender. As you fold your body forward, you are consciously letting go of the need to hold your head up, to keep your back straight, and to be on alert. You are surrendering to gravity and allowing yourself to be supported, which begins the process of releasing deeply held tension in the spine.
Continue the release with Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall). This posture is the epitome of passive release. There is no effort required, no holding on. You simply allow the wall and the floor to support you completely. This act of non-doing is profoundly therapeutic, teaching your nervous system that it’s safe to let go of its hyper-vigilance and enter a state of deep relaxation.
Complete the process with Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend). In this pose, the “letting go” is active and conscious. With each exhale, you are invited to soften, to release a little more tension from your neck, shoulders, and back. It’s not about forcing the stretch, but about surrendering to it. This mindful release of physical tension has a direct and powerful effect on releasing mental and emotional stress as well.
