That “cozy” feeling of curling up in bed could be a trap for your spine. A spine alignment specialist has issued a warning about two of the most popular sleeping positions—stomach and fetal—detailing how they can lead to chronic pain. The expert highlighted that sleep is supposed to be a time for the body to repair muscles and joints, but a bad posture can turn this restorative period into a nightly source of strain.
The specialist explained that a misaligned spine during sleep leads to uneven pressure on vertebrae and nerves. This disrupts the body’s repair cycle. The expert cautioned that this isn’t just about waking up sore; it’s a long-term problem. Continuing to sleep this way can lead to chronic back and neck pain and even a permanent posture imbalance.
The first position to be flagged was stomach sleeping. The specialist explained that this position is inherently “unnatural.” It forces you to twist your neck to one side, which can strain neck muscles and compress nerves. It also causes the lower back to arch excessively, putting stress on the lumbar region. Many stomach sleepers develop stiffness in the neck and lower back as a result.
The second position is the tightly curled fetal pose. The expert noted that while it feels comforting, “such a position rounds the spine too much.” This excessive C-curve over-stretches the back muscles, tightens the hip flexors, and restricts the diaphragm, which limits deep breathing. This can lead to decreased flexibility and chronic mid-back pain over time.
To protect your spine, the specialist recommends a neutral sleeping posture. The goal is to maintain the spine’s natural curve. This is best achieved by lying on your back with a small pillow under your knees, or on your side with a supportive pillow between your legs. These positions distribute weight evenly, prevent strain, and allow for a truly restorative night’s sleep.
