Sheinbaum Calls Chile Election Outcome a Moment of Reflection for Latin America’s Progressives

by admin477351

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has described the victory of Chile’s far-right candidate José Antonio Kast as a moment for reflection among progressive movements across Latin America, while ruling out a similar political shift in Mexico.
Speaking at her regular morning press conference, Sheinbaum said the election result in Chile should prompt deeper analysis of the factors behind the decline in support for progressive governments in some countries. She noted that internal divisions within political movements can weaken public backing, pointing to the importance of unity in sustaining long-term support.
Sheinbaum congratulated Kast on his electoral victory, stressing that the outcome was decided through a democratic process. She emphasized that while Mexico supports governments that are closer to the people, it also respects the will of voters expressed through free and fair elections. According to her, the Chilean result reflects the choice of the electorate and must be respected as such.
The Mexican leader underlined that Mexico’s political landscape is different, citing strong public support for her administration, continued social policies aimed at reducing poverty, and cohesion within the governing movement. These factors, she said, make a similar conservative shift unlikely in Mexico.
Sheinbaum concluded by reiterating her commitment to democratic values and regional cooperation, expressing confidence that Mexico and Chile will continue working together for the benefit of their citizens and Latin America as a whole.
