Seven days after the opening strikes killed Iran’s supreme leader and shattered the region’s precarious equilibrium, the US-Israeli offensive shows no signs of slowing. President Donald Trump has ruled out any negotiated settlement, demanding unconditional surrender from Tehran and warning of “absolutely guaranteed death” for those who resist. The conflict has already killed thousands, displaced millions, and destabilized global energy and financial markets.
The military operations on Friday were among the most intense of the conflict. American B-2 stealth bombers dropped dozens of 2,000-pound penetrating bombs on Iran’s underground ballistic missile infrastructure. A major Iranian naval vessel used to launch drones was struck and possibly sunk. Israel issued its most sweeping evacuation orders to date in Lebanon, covering over one million people, and struck Hezbollah positions across Beirut and its surroundings. The defense secretary promised the US was about to significantly increase its firepower.
Iran has retaliated on every front available to it. Missiles and drones were launched at Gulf states hosting US military forces, with attacks reported in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Several were intercepted; others caused damage. Missiles continued to be fired at Israel, though in reduced numbers. The Revolutionary Guards claimed strikes on Israeli military sites and promised new weapons and tactics. Hezbollah continued its rocket and anti-tank campaign in Lebanon, inflicting casualties on Israeli forces near the border.
The humanitarian picture has darkened considerably. Over 1,230 Iranians have been killed. Six Americans have died. Lebanon counts more than 200 dead. An airstrike on a girls’ school in Iran killed more than 100 students, with US investigators now believing American forces were likely responsible. Over one million Lebanese are displaced. Iran’s internet is at approximately 1% of normal capacity. The Red Cross described scenes of mass panic in Lebanon, with families fleeing with nothing, unsure where safety lies.
International efforts to halt the fighting have made no progress. The UN has appealed for restraint. European allies have expressed alarm. Arab states have condemned civilian casualties while quietly cooperating with US military operations from their territories. Britain has deployed additional fighter jets to the region. And Trump has stated clearly that his objectives — regime change, unconditional surrender, and a role in selecting Iran’s new leadership — will not be negotiated away. One week in, the war has a beginning but no visible end.
