The rice tariff consideration stemmed from advocacy by Meryl Kennedy, CEO of Kennedy Rice Mills and 4 Sisters Rice, who attended the White House event. Kennedy provided Trump with detailed information about how international competition has created unsustainable market conditions for domestic rice farmers.
Trump examined evidence that India, Thailand, and China are major sources of allegedly dumped rice. The president expressed frustration about these practices, questioning his administration’s officials about why current trade arrangements permit such behavior and whether special exemptions protect certain countries.
