The United States is formally entering the fray for influence in Central Asia, with the president set to host the region’s five leaders for a major summit on November 6.
This move, confirmed by the Kazakh and Kyrgyz presidents, places the US in direct competition with China and Russia, who have both recently held similar high-level talks. The EU has also ramped up its engagement.
The five nations, collectively spanning an area as large as the EU, are at the center of this geopolitical “scramble.” Russia’s traditional dominance has been challenged, creating a vacuum.
The region is not only strategically located but also holds vast reserves of minerals and energy. Its 80 million inhabitants are part of a coordinated effort to become a key hub for East-West trade.
While three leaders have yet to confirm, the planned summit is a powerful signal of Washington’s intent to counter its rivals and build new partnerships in this critical part of the world.
